It started raining about this time last night and hasn't stopped. I'm glad I was at work all day. My shoes and socks got soaked walking across the parking lot this morning, but they dried out after a couple of hours! I forgot to take my camera this morning. Darn! I ended up making a really cute frog cake freehand, more or less, and several really cute pumpkins.
Since I don't have cake photos to share, I'll go back to our family pictures from Sunday. I finally figured out where my computer put them!
Here's my favorite photo of my great-grandson with his mother. He was 1 month old on October 1st.
Here's my youngest grandson. He was born January 26th of this year. He usually has a great big smile. I like this more serious look.
And last but not least, a close up of the baby. I was holding him and looking into his eyes when I took this. My camera has a pre-flash that goes off when you depress the shutter half way so you can focus the camera by pointing it at the subject and depressing the shutter. I was holding the camera above my head.
I love the colors in the blossoms of my new impatiens, something of a cross between hot pink and coral.
I love these old fashioned petunias. They have been coming up from seed for years. I like their delicate colors.
I'm going to have to try to recreate these colors on a cake. I'll spray the cake a light purple, then create paint ball like splatters. It won't be quite the same, but it should be stunning.
I had time to experiment some yesterday. I tried different ways to do red/white/blue since Sunday is Flag Day. Some of them worked better than others, but I did come up with a couple of new ideas that I will continue to use. I felt really good to have a chance to be creative again.
These petunias didn't look very promising when I planted them, but with a little TLC they are coming along nicely. I must have a thing this year for hot pink and purple! I have them in a pot sitting in a bird bath. My hubby won't let me keep water in the bird bath 'cause he is paranoid about bugs. It does make it easy to keep them well watered!
I was in a baking/cooking mood today. I had some new recipes I wanted to try, so I tried 3 in one day. That is a record, I'm sure! This morning I put a vegetable soup in the crock pot. That turned out very nice. Then I made a loaf of Italian bread. I didn't let it raise enough, so it was a tad heavy, but we ate it with the soup anyway. Then I made a plum dessert with some plums I found in the freezer while I was cleaning it out yesterday. They have been in there for a spell 'cause I never knew what to do with them. Hubby really likes it 'cause it is both sweet and tart.
Tomorrow we are driving half way across the state to watch our oldest son perform in his first community theatre production. He hasn't acted since his college days, but I'm sure he'll do us proud.
I got out my camera manual to figure out how to adjust the white balance. I always use the auto setting. But I've discovered so many other neat things about my camera whilst learning new things for Photo Quest, that I can't wait to try. May have a chance to play around a bit tomorrow. I rarely take photos in auto mode any more and am constantly flipping things around. Problem is, I don't write anything down, and by the time I get the photos on the computer, I don't remember what I did!
Now to get a few more shots loaded up to iStock!
No photos tonight. I've taken several since I arrived down here yesterday afternoon, but I can't figure out how to get them from my camera card to my daugher's laptop. May have to try her desk top.
It was 1 above zero when we left MO Friday morning. This afternoon we were outside with just our long sleeved shirts on. It was still 70 degrees late in the afternoon. I think I could get used to this!
I'll go upstairs and try the other computer. I tryed taking some shots out the window of the airplane, and I would like to see how they turned out.
I feel like I lost a day or two from my life. Ike came calling Saturday evening and stuck around until about noon on Sunday. I got to work Sunday morning, because I left at 6:00 am and it was dark and I could see how much water there was everywhere.
By the time I got off work, all the rivers were out of their banks and I couldn't get back home. I was lucky because our house is on a hill, and even though all of the soybean fields on our farm were flooded, we didn't have any wind or water damage to our house. And I was able to spend the night at our son's house, so it wasn't too bad. Certainly not as bad as a lot of people who have been really suffering.
It was cloudy all day today, with just a break in the clouds as the sun went down. I took this with the foliage setting, I think, to try to get the colors to be truer.
Here's basically the same shot taken with either the landscape setting or on automatic. I change the settings so much all the time now, that I forget which setting I've used for which picture. My hubby went out yesterday to take pictures of all the water. I had left the camera on manual setting, which he didn't think was right, so he changed it and ended up taking movie clips. Some of them are really funny. I have several clips of him walking where all you can see is the tips of his shoes on the gravel. He's done something with the camera that I haven't tried yet!
No work tomorrow. I'm ready for a day off!
I installed some new software on my computer tonight. I've been experimenting with the photo editing program. I didn't do anything to this wildflower except copy and resize. I'm going to have to spend a lot more time working with it to really know what I am doing!
I got one batch of crab apple jelly made this afternoon. It is a very labor-intensive project, but the results are worth it. We had to have several pieces of butter bread with jelly just to make sure it was edible! I worked on one more pan full of apples just to have a head start on tomorrow's batch. I wanted to get a picture of the jars sitting on the window sill of the kitchen, but my camera was upstairs and I was too tired to go get it. I would have made the effort, but I knew I would have another chance tomorrow.
My interview tomorrow is at 9:00 in the morning, so I may not get around to checking my email until after I get home. I'll need to leave the house by 8:00. It really doesn't take that long to get there, but I like to give myself a little wiggle room.
After two days, this is the best picture of my three year old twin granddaughters that I could get. They don't like to sit still for anything, much less pictures! These are the girls I made the dresses for. I think they would look cute in them, but they weren't interested in trying them on. They are independent thinkers already.
We had a good time with all our company. We had six children here on Thursday that were three and under. I tried to get a picture of all of them, but that was impossible. They played pretty good together. It was too cold and rainy for them to be outside. Grandpa did take some of them for a tractor ride.
On Friday night, we all went to our youngest daughter's wedding reception. She had gotten married in Hawaii in November. I tried taking a lot of pictures, but most of them didn't turn out very good. I changed the mode on my camera to night time to take a picture of a fountain with colored lights, then forgot to change it. The shutter was open too long for all the rest of my pictures. Some of them are rather interesting in a weird sort of way. I'll post one or two of them anyway.
I have a whole set of pictures with light streaks now. Looks like some kind of weird light show.
I stayed in the city on Saturday so I could take care of my youngest baby while his mom worked and took at nap. Everyone else went to the zoo. It was a beautiful day.
I was wiped out yesterday. Had a headache all day. It wasn't that it hurt that bad; it made me dizzy, kind of like being seasick. I was still tired this afternoon. Guess I'm too old to be a party girl!
We had a sprinkle of rain this morning, then sunshine this afternoon. I took a few more pictures of dandeloins, iris, bugs, and some pretty little white flowers that I don't know the name of. I'll post a picture to see if anyone can help me out!
Here are my mystery flowers. Does anyone know what their name is? They are bulbs that come back every year. They bloom at the same time the iris do. I am forever digging them up after they die down so they have gotten scattered all over my flower bed.
I feel like I haven't quilted forever. I cleaned up my sewing area and put everything away before the girls got here and I haven't felt good enough to get it out yet. I did a couple of loads of laundry today, including washing all of my spring sweaters. I laid them out of the table on the porch to dry, but they were still damp this evening, so I covered them up with a sheet in case the cat decided they looked like a good place to sleep.
I have a dentist appointment tomorrow. I have to get a huge filling because I can't afford a crown right now. Oh, well. The filling may last as long as I do! LOL
I don't have very many tulips anymore, but these opened up today. I took a walk this morning while it was still raining lightly, but I couldn't resist going back out with my camera tonight, even though I have already submitted my photographs for the challenge. We got almost an inch of rain this morning. Everything is so green and pretty.
I didn't do much quilting today. I started on another pot holder that I will work on again tonight. I also worked on two more projects - the dresses for the twins, and a table runner that I'm knitting with fabric strips. I know it sounds weird, but I think it is really pretty. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.
