No photos today. I wanted to get out and take some shots for this week's Photo Quest, but it was too cold and windy. Yesterday was warmer, but the wind was terrible. Plus, five of our grandkids came out late in the afternoon, so nothing got accomplished after they got here, except feeding and playing with them. Our oldest granddaughter is 20 now, so she brought her brother and sisters out, ranging in age from 10 down to 18 months. They were out last Saturday, too. It is really hard to keep in touch when you don't see them. We will get to see them again next Saturday, but it will be at a birthday party, so there won't be much one on one.
I did finish another table mat today that matches the last table runner I made. Took a nap, finished reading a book, and spent lots of time on the computer. I had to uninstall my virus protection again. I couldn't get it to activate, and I couldn't get logged in to my bank account. It is aggravating! I took forever for it to download updates yesterday. My desk is cleaned all again, and I have the farm records up to date. Yeah! I don't want to wait until the end of the year again to do that!
I have to work tomorrow at 11:00. Monday's usually aren't too bad, especially if I have help. There is just too much for one person, but we are still short staffed. Anyone want a job decorating cakes? If we have the people we need, we can keep busy, and still have time to be creative. When we are short staffed, it isn't much fun, and you have to rush everything. I thought maybe the economy would affect the number of cakes we sell, but it hasn't seemed to. Of course, we used to have twice as many people on the staff as we do now!
We got a downpour this morning, but no storms. At least I didn't have to go out and water the bulbs/plants that I had moved. I know this isn't the right time to transplant things, but in my book the right time to do most anything is when I have the time, the energy, and the inclination! Sounds like it is going to be chilly again this week.
I did spend some time working on my menus for my week as cook at the camp for kids with cancer. Camp isn't until the first week of June, but I need to get things organized ASAP. I will have to place my orders by the middle of May. Sometime this week I've got to ask for the week off from work. Anyone want to volunteer for a week working for a good cause?
No photos tonight. I've taken several since I arrived down here yesterday afternoon, but I can't figure out how to get them from my camera card to my daugher's laptop. May have to try her desk top.
It was 1 above zero when we left MO Friday morning. This afternoon we were outside with just our long sleeved shirts on. It was still 70 degrees late in the afternoon. I think I could get used to this!
I'll go upstairs and try the other computer. I tryed taking some shots out the window of the airplane, and I would like to see how they turned out.
Here's my first finished place mat of the set of four that go with the table runner. I decided the Fields and Furrows pattern worked best with the fabrics I had. The whole project was made with fabrics from my stash. I really like the red border. I finished another place mat this morning. I am hand stitching the binding on the back side. I need to check to make sure I have enough batting and backing to finish the table runner. I think I have enough fabric for the binding.
It was 60 degrees here yesterday afternoon, but it sure looks and feels like winter today. We had another snow shower earlier. I'm fixing baked potatoes for lunch again today. I made pototo soup last night.
Still have some computer work that I need to do this afternoon, then I can do some more sewing. Yeah!
Here's my first completed Country By Design project for 2009. It isn't much, just a 10 inch square, but it is finished. I had it finished last night with a dark blue border, but I didn't like it, so I took it off and put on this white print one. I also got one place mat stitched together and quilted. Don't know what kind of border I'm going to use for them.
It 's back to work tomorrow, then I have two days off. I did get some computer stuff done today. Two of my daughters had given me gift cards to J.Jill, one of my favorite stores, for Christmas. I know they are closed their brick and mortar stores soon, and I'm not sure about their catalogs, so I didn't want to wait too long before I used them. I was able to choose several sale items, including a warm pair of cords to wear to work.
I have a little bit of a cold that isn't bothering me too much, except it is making my eyes hurt. I didn't put my contacts in today so I have been wearing my glasses. Even so, my left eye is still painful. Hope it's nothing serious.
Today was an easy cooking day. Hubby fixed eggs for breakfast, I baked potatoes for lunch (sweet for me and Irish for him), and tonight it was tuna melts with leftover brown rice and peas. One of my goals for the year is to eat healthier, which means cutting way back on bread. I could live on bread, so that is going to be a struggle, especially since I have to take my lunch to work every day. I need to make spaghetti and chili so I can take leftovers for lunch.
We had a few flakes to snow floating around earlier tonight, but it isn't going to amount to anything. Our winter has been pretty mild so far.
I usually avoid flash photography like the plague, so this week's Photo Quest challenge to shot with flash was a real challenge.
I have been working on it for two nights. Tonight I went through about 100 shots to try to pick out some good ones. This one made the cut. The petunia bloom is about half way open. It wasn't dark yet when I took the shot; the sun was just setting, and I used a filter to keep from over exposing the flower.
I worked up a few more apples today, but didn't make any more jelly. Hubby didn't go looking for the jars. One of our sons is coming tomorrow. Maybe he will go look for them. If he has time, I want him to set my old computer up for my hubby's sister, who lives with us. She can use it to edit and print pictures, play games, etc. She just won't have internet access.
I did do a lot of paperwork on the computer today. I paid bills and balanced bank accounts and downloaded banking info to Money 2005, I'm going to have to see if the bank can send me all of the back dated info that I need from January through June. I tried several times today to order some blank check registers and deposit slips. Since I do most of our banking on the computer, I run out of registers and slips a long time before I run out of checks. Does anyone have a place that you can order those two things from? I found a couple of web sites, but I couldn't complete the transaction at either place.
Photo Quest is going to have to wait. I'm running out of steam. Think I'll watch a little bit of the Olympics before I go to bed. Later!
Here's the latest shot of my buddy, the green caterpillar. He is growning! I did some research today but couldn't figure out what kind of caterpillar he is. Does anyone know? He was just eating the small buds. Now he is mowing through the leaves.
Our 1 year old twin grandbabies and their older brother came to see us yesterday. Here is the little boy trying on one of his Papa's hats. He has the bluest eyes! He had already fallen in the lake and gotten his clothes all wet.
It was pretty warm, so the babies stayed in the house while all the big people went fishing. They were biting pretty good. Everyone caught several.
I took this shot of the row of trees to the west of our house yesterday after everyone went home. A storm was coming in from the north. The wind really picked up. It blew all of the short corn flat on the ground. We got another 2 inches of rain so fast that it washed out our gravel road in several. Since my hubby takes care of our road, even though it does belong to the county, he was out fixing everything most of the day today.
I'm beginning to get this new computer figured out. I had to change some settings to get me email program to work right. I ordered Microsoft Works 2005 tonight so I will have a word processing program, etc. I'll have to see if I like the photo editing program that comes with it. I need to make some new business cards, but I'm going to have to get a new printer first.
I made a Chocolate Zucchini Cake this afternoon that is pretty good. Not as good as the zucchini bread, but not bad. Then I tried making a zucchini "crust" for meatloaf so I would have meatloaf "pie". That turned out really good. It would have been better if we had let it cool off a bit before we ate it. It is an excellent way to use extra zucchini.
Today has been quite a day! My hard drive on my old computer died last night. So I went to the local computer store this morning and bought a new one. This one came with Windows Vista already installed. I've used the program before, but I'm still having trouble loading pictures from the computer to Vox.
I've seen this little frog outside by the garage for the past day or two, but today was the first time that I've seen him when I had my camera in my hand. He usually hops away as soon as I get close, so I was really surprised when he sat still long enough for me to get this photo.
Most of the toads around here are much lighter in color. Don't know if he is dark because he is small, or if he is a different kind of frog. He is about half an inch long.
Here's our favorite green worm. Looks like he's grown since his last photo.
Do you think we should name him? After all, I can't resist taking pictures of him and posting them. Anyone have any ideas for a name?
I will share my zucchini bread recipe, but I want to go out and take a few more pictures.
Later!
This is the only good hummingbird photo that I was able to take yesterday. He looks like he is looking at me. I didn't realize that they have white in their tail feathers. May try again this evening.
I'm going to try to get my water shots loaded for Photo Quest tonight. I think my computer is more dead than alive. I'm taking it in to the shop tomorrow.
I was able to get a set of pictures loaded to Snapfish and get a flipbook ordered. This is the first time I have tried that so we will see what happens.
The sun is almost down far enough for picture taking. I wish there were more clouds.
If you don't hear from me again for awhile it will be because my computer is toast!
No new pictures today, so I'll share a recipe instead. Don't really know what I did today, except take a nap this afternoon. I did work on my raggy knitted place mats a little bit, but I don't really have anything else to show that I was alive today! I did get some pictures sent to Snapfish and two sets of prints ordered, and some of the pictures deleted from my computer. That doesn't sound like much, but as slow as my computer is, it takes time to do that sort of thing. I did add some more pictures to my last Etsy listing, and I edited another listing. I had added a border of one of the lovies I had made, so I added a new set of pictures. I did do some work on the counted cross stitch project I have up here by the computer, and solved another Sudoku puzzle.
Here's my recipe for the day. I found it by doing a recipe search on Google, but it is from Cooks.com. I tried it several weeks ago because I wanted to make these cookies from camp this summer and I didn't have a recipe. It is for No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies. They are really easy to make, and absolutely impossible to stop eating!
NO BAKE CHOCOLATE OATMEAL COOKIES
from Cook's.com
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup peanut butter
3 cups rolled oats
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix first four ingredients in large heavy bottom saucepan and bring to a boil.
Cook for three minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat.
Add the vanilla, peanut butter, and oats; mix well.
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper.
Cool until firm.
Makes about 4 dozen small cookies.
Baby came with me this evening when I went out to take pictures for this week's Photo Quest. This picture didn't make the cut for the contest, but I had to share it anyway.
Didn't do any quilting today. Had a very nice visit with two of our sons and their families. We had sandwiches for lunch and ham for dinner, so I didn't wear myself out cooking all day.
I started cleaning up some of the pictures I have saved on my computer. I am running out of room! I had to delete a bunch of files just so I could get my pictures off the camera. Need to do more deleting. Or get more storage.
Time for bed, but I want to try to send some pictures to Snapfish. Wish it didn't take so long to send them.
