I came down to the city yesterday because my city baby is sick again. He doesn't even want his grammy this time. I haven't taken any pictures so this one is from last month. I have tried growing these in the country, but haven't had much success. May have to try again.
My interview at the hospital is this afternoon. Then I will probably go home. Have to stop somewhere and look for some shutters. And pick up a few groceries.
Talked to hubby this morning. He said it is raining again. That is very unusual for us in July. As a general rule, we get very little rain in July. Bet I will have to pick beans and zucchini when I get home. Can't wait to work on the homespun quilt!
These black-eyed Susans came up in the bucket that my hubby had planted a tree in, so he has been watering them.
My flower bed is not formal by any stretch of the imagination. English country is probably a better description. If it comes up, and its a flower, I usually just leave it alone!
All three of these photos were taken just before dark last night using flash. I usually turn the flash off, but in this case, it lights up the flowers and makes the background dark.
Jean requested the recipe for the Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie, so here goes.
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE PIE
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter, melted and cooled
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 9-inch deep dish pie shell
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, beat eggs until foamy. Add flour, sugar, and brown sugar; beat until will blended. Blend in melted butter. Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts. Pour into unbaked pie shell.
Bake at 325 degrees of 1 hour. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
Enjoy!
Another tiger lilly. That seems to be the only thing interesting that I can take pictures of these days. And somehow, I'm not sure they are as good as they could be. Anyone have any ideas on how to take better pictures of tiger lillies?
Our parish picnic was today. I made a couple of chocolate chip cookie pies (new recipe!) this morning, then worked from noon til 3:00. It wasn't as bad as I was afraid it would be. I'm not used to being outside in the heat anymore. It was nice to get together with people that I don't get to see that often.
I've been trying for three days to get some more photographs uploaded to iStockphoto, but nothing happens. Don't know if it is my computer, or something else. My slow connection doesn't help matters. I was able to upload over 100 pictures to Snapfish last night.
I've started working on a lap quilt made from homespun fabrics. I was able to buy several new pieces on Friday at Wal-Mart. Hope our local store doesn't close their fabric department!
My tiger lillies started blooming today and I thought it would be easy to get a great photograph. Wrong! I took several this morning, and none of them turned out very good. I took a dozen or so tonight and got a couple to pretty good ones. It is going to take some more trial and error to figure out the best angle and time of day.
I thought the petals on the tiger lillies just had dark colored spots, but when you look close, you can see that the spots in close to the center are actually small projections. I'll have to try to get a better picture tomorrow. It was still a little bit early when I went out tonight. I walked down to the lake to get another water picture, but the lake was still choppy. Sometimes it looks like glass, but not tonight.
Here's a good example of an afternoon daylilly. Just look at all that pollen! It looks like gold dust.
I had to walk up our gravel road, cross the county black top, and wade across the weeds in the ditch to get up to this Queen Anne's lace. This one is just starting to open up. The florets around the edges are open while the ones in the center are still tightly closed. The sun went behind a bank early this evening, so I was able to get out fairly early.
This one is just barely beginning to open. It is really exquisite when it is blown up. It doesn't have much impact at this size.
Now here's something with impact! These bright orange daylillies are incredible! You can even see the opening in the end of the pistil. When you blow it up, you can see that the pollen has been scattered about. It wasn't windy today at all, so it had to be bees or hummingbirds. I like the slight ruffling at the edges of the petals.
Wow! I can't believe it has been four days since I posted anything. My daylillies started blooming this week. The dark colors bloom first. This dark red one has a purple cast. I have some other dark red ones that are more rust colored. The stamens in this one are really interesting, and the center almost glows. I don't remember the variety names of any of my daylillies any more. I had tags for awhile, but they are long gone.
On Wednesday I had to clean house because my hubby's sister and one of her son's, and his family were coming. After I got the house picked up, I started cooking. I made some oatmeal bread and salmon pasta salad from new recipes that turned out very good. I used my favorite Betty Crocker recipe for pumpkin bread. I had everything finished and was just taking the bread out of the oven when they pulled into the drive.
We had a nice visit with all six of them. My sister-in-law stayed at our house. Her son and his family went back to the city. They were down here on vacation for a week.
On Thursday, it was cool and cloudy. We took it easy in the morning, walking around in the yard and watching the hummingbirds. One time we counted six around the feeder. It was amazing to watch them. It was cool enough that we could sit out on the porch and visit, then hubby took his sister for a canoe ride. We ate an early lunch, then headed for the city. We had to take a trailer down to our son's house. He is building a new deck and had to have something to do with the old one. Then we took our two year old grandson and went on down to the city to look at an old lawn mower we had found on Craig's List. We had taken pictures of our's along to compare. They weren't the same, but we took it anyway. The guy said we could bring it back if it didn't work.
Then it was back to our son's house. Our grandson thought he was going to Papa's house to go fishing and tractor riding. He was a little disappointed when we came back to his house! By this time, both of our other son's were there, so we left all the kids with grandpa, and all the girls went out to eat to celebrate my birthday. Two of my daughter's met us at the restuarant and we had a really nice evening. The mother of the two year old got to share the news that they are expecting another baby in February! That will be number 13.
Hubby needs to make a phone call, so I'll have to finish updating tomorrow. If you don't hear from me for awhile, it will be because my computer died!
Every day I think I'm going to run out of things to that pictures of, but I always manage to find something. These dark red flowers grow on a rather tall plant without many leaves. I don't know what it is, but the color is striking.
I finished another Moda project tonight. I'll post pictures tomorrow.
No rain again today. It is starting to get dry. I watered plants this morning and again this afternoon. Haven't gotten out the hose and sprinkler yet, but will have to if it doesn't rain on Thursday.
Hubby walked down to the lake a couple of times today, but no action. At least he doesn't have to mow the grass so often. He still doesn't have his mower fixed. He had to borrow on last week. The grass is still soft and green. I love to walk barefoot in it.
I did manage to get one fairly good photo of my hummingbirds this afternoon. I next to crop it down because I wasn't close enough.
This doesn't compare to Darcy's dragonflies, but it is the best insect shot I've ever taken. I wouldn't have seen him if I hadn't been taking pictures because he is exactly the same color as the tiger lilly he is sitting on.
Here's my latest experiment with my photo editing software. Wouldn't this make a really neat fabric design?
Had an almost perfect day in the country today. It was cool all day, and cloudy. The only problem was a little wind. I spent a couple of hours working in my flower bed. I completely dug up one section and replanted it. A couple of the day lillies have bloomed, but right now is a slow time. I didn't get any annuals planted. I did plant some seed, so I will have a few later. Maybe they won't get as ugly in late summer as they usually do since their season will be so much shorter.
I'm going to do some more quilting tomorrow. I have an idea for the last set of Moda fabric that I bought earlier.
Nothing exciting happening today. I have been editing and organizing photos, so I'll share a few. Here is the series I took over the past week of the red geranium. It's amazing how much it changed from day to day.
The sixth shot is of a different flower, but all the rest are the same, taken from almost exactly the same angle.
