This is the only fall color I have in my yard. This bush is about 30 years old, but we give it "haircuts" every year or two to keep it from growing too big.
Off to the west of our house, there is a creek with bluffs that get some color in the trees. They are mostly hardwoods, a lot of oaks, so they don't have the brilliant colors that softwoods do. In this shot, the sun was peaking through the clouds in just the right place to highlight the trees.
Even though we have had some cold weather, down to 28 on Sunday morning, I still have a few petunias hanging on. Of course I had to edit this one. I just love the watercolor effect. I intensified the color, too.
The dogs are off for a walk, so I'm going to sneak outside and see if I can find anything to take pictures of and/or dig up in the flower bed. I know I had a couple of plants that I meant to bring in. It may be too late!
I had to take some more photos of my petunias. These are in a hanging basket on my back porch. They look so much more dramatic with the watercolor filter applied.
The pink one in the birdbath still looks pretty good, too, especially when edited to look like a watercolor painting.
The wagon out in front of the house is suffering from serious neglect, but I rather like the wild look. All the vines, etc. have come up as volunteers.
You can tell by the walnut tree that summer is almost over. Most of the leaves have fallen off already and the nuts are starting to fall. This tree, in our yard, is loaded with nuts this year. Plenty of food for the squirrels. The nuts should be really good, too, since we had plenty of rain.
It was late this evening when I went outside with my camera. The sun was already getting low in the sky. Our sycamore trees had a lot of these seed pods on them this year. They are really weird looking.
I made chicken enchiladas for dinner tonight. Yum, yum. It is one of my favorite chicken dishes. We still have some fresh green beans from our pole beans, and a few tomatoes. I ate an apple for dessert, but it wasn't as good as I expected. I've got to remember to look for some locally grown fresh apples from this season. We should have planted an apple tree a long time ago, but we didn't want to have to spray it, etc. Have to see what I can find at the store.
Mercy me! What happened to this week? How did it get to be Thursday night already? I did take my camera out for a few minutes this evening. It was so humid that I had fog on my lens.
Here is a shot of one of my volunteer petunias anyway. I applied the watercolor effect to the shot. I like the way it sharpens the edges. It doesn't look foggy now.
I liked the watercolor effect so much on the purple petunia that I decided to try it on this pink one, too. I really like it.
I stayed outside for an hour or so, but I didn't take any more pictures. I started pulling a few weeds, then couldn't quit. By the time I wore out, I had a stack the size of a small hay bale! I went ahead and pulled out some of the summer flowers that were on their last legs. I want to get some mums in the ground. Wal-Mart put out their big mum display yesterday. Now I will have to decide if I want to get all one color, or as many colors as possible.
I remember to take my camera to work with me this week, but I forgot to take it up front with me. I still want to get a compact one that I can just slip in my pocket. I think that is what I will get myself for Christmas. I made a really pretty cake on Wednesday that I would love to have a picture of. I work again on Saturday, then spend the rest of the weekend in St. Louis.
I survived a house full on company this weekend, including one of my daughters and six of my grandkids, including a two year old who had never spent the night away from home without his mommy. They all did better than I thought they might. They were all girls except for the two year old and ranged in age from 4 to 10. For the most part they played well together and in small groups, and it didn't take forever to get them to bed at night, and we got all of them to church by 8:00 am this morning! Then our oldest son and his wife and daugher joined the group this afternoon. I'm ready for bed!
I finally got my camera out this evening after everyone had left and we had things picked up a little bit. It was a lovely evening. No wind or clouds with a pale blue sky. The sun was setting low in the west and shining like a spotlight on the flowers.
It's back to work tomorrow, but then I'm not scheduled for several days. That doesn't mean I'll be sitting around, but that's a post for another day. Good night!
We had rain again this morning, but the sun was shining by the time I got home from work. I'm still working on taking good pictures of my tiger lilies.
I like this shot of the bottom of a petunia blossom. This one is in a hanging basket on my porch.
I took a few more shots tonight, but my computer is acting really slow. Maybe I'll try again in the morning.
Aren't you lucky? You are going to get the flower garden tour again. I just can't resist. It was really wet out this morning, so I didn't take the tripod. I'm not sure how to set the white balance when it is sunny, but you are shooting in the shade, so I just used an auto setting.
I had these orchid petunias out where they got full sun in the afternoon, but it was too much for them. I moved them a week or so ago and they are much happier now.
These are the petunias in the bird bath. I don't seem to be able to get a good clear photo of them.
This is my favorite shot of the morning. I love the little inch worm on the black eyed Susan. I need to go load a couple of shot up to iStock, then I need to get busy with my sewing. I've been lolly-gagging too much!
I got home in plenty of time to take pictures tonight, but by the time I ate some pasta salad, opened the mail, and fed the hummingbirds, the light wasn't right. I did get this shot of the petunias in the wagon.
I forgot to take my camera to work today. I may have to get a smaller one that I can fit in my pocket more easily. Mine is too big to hide. I worked by myself today, but didn't have time to do any really creative cakes. I did a couple of big cookies that were really cute. One was a picnic for ants, with some grass, a red and white checked table cloth, a couple of ants, and a slice of watermelon. The other one was decorated to look like a big slice of watermelon. I don't work again until Thursday.
I did rather like this petunia blossom. The sun was hitting the back of it and shining through. I'll have to go out early again in the morning. I seem to do better then.
I'm having a hard time remembering what day of the week it is. I usually don't have this many days off in a row. I got interested in some programs on TV last night and didn't get back to the computer. I have been doing more cooking since I've been home, including a lovely pasta salad yesterday. I had looked at recipes until I was blue in the face, but in the end, I just winged it, and if I may say so myself, I've never made or eaten a pasta salad that I liked better. Here's what it looked like.
The volunteer petunias were looking pretty this morning.
Nothing new blooming today. I did get one rather good shot of the zinnias. I'm put some meat in the oven to make BBQ, but first I want to get a listing on Etsy.
I finished a table runner last night. It has taken me a long time to get my work space squared away after our basement was flooded. I did get rid of a large lot of boxes that were just taking up space. Everything looks better now and my stash is better organized. I think I will feel better when I get to sewing again.
Anyway, here's the table runner. It's make entirely of squares that I had already cut out and/or were left over from other projects, except for the backing, and that is cut from small pieces of fabric that someone gave to me.
You can check out more pictures at www.countrybydesign.esty.com.
I actually got my tripod out yesterday afternoon before everyone left so I could fiddle with it a little bit. I got some really cute shots of our youngest grandson. It's amazing how much easier it is to take pictures when you don't have to worry about holding the camera still.
Here are my red and white petunias in the wagon in front of our house. I went out this morning and got most of the grass pulled out. I also picked our first batch of green beans, and did some work on the big flower bed. By 9:30 am it was so hot that I couldn't stand it! Didn't go out to do anything in the yard the rest of the day.
My dark red day lillies have just started blooming. Some of the smaller orange ones are blooming, too. I should have gone back out this evening, but it was just too hot.
I did do something this afternoon that I haven't done for a long time. I went into town to donate blood. I used to do it all the time, but then it didn't work out with my work schedule. I don't have any trouble with the needles, etc. It's the tape they put on your arm that I can't stand. I was pulling it off as I walked out the door! They almost didn't let me donate. My iron level from my left hand was only 11.8, so I had to wait a few minutes and try again with my right hand. 12.5 this time. Guess I'm going to have to eat more raisins! I did get some good news. My blood pressure was 110/76, even after getting out in the heat and sitting around for half and hour or so waiting.
I have to work late the next two days, so don't expect much from me in the blogging department. Toodles!
How can it be Thursday night already? Where has this week gone? I have to work tomorrow and Saturday, so I won't get much done then, either. I think I have taken some photographs this week. Let me look.
Someone (sorry, I forgot your name) wanted to know if I was making any more rag quilted table mats. Today I started taking this table runner apart to make place mats instead. It is mostly unbleached muslin and red, blue, and green checked homespun. I'll post most pics as I go.
Here's my latest project. If I remember right, it is made up entirely of squares that I had already cut for other projects, etc.
I just need to attach the last row and decide if it needs a border. At first, I didn't put borders on anything, then I started putting borders on everything. On this one, I'm not sure what to do.
One of my few success stories this summer has been an old wooden wagon that we have in our front yard. This year I filled it with red and white petunias. So far, it has rained enough that they are stunning. It has helped that it hasn't been really hot until yesterday and today. We finally turned on the air conditioner. We really hadn't needed it until now. I went out this morning to work in the garden and got so sweaty that I had to change clothes, then I went out this afternoon to help my hubby try to figure out why our floor drains in the basement aren't working and got so hot that I had to take a shower! I didn't even go back out this evening 'cause I didn't want to get sticky. Rain in the forecast for tomorrow, so it may be cooler. I'll try to get a good photo of the Shasta daisies. They are just starting to bloom.
