I'm having a hard time remembering what day of the week it is. I usually don't have this many days off in a row. I got interested in some programs on TV last night and didn't get back to the computer. I have been doing more cooking since I've been home, including a lovely pasta salad yesterday. I had looked at recipes until I was blue in the face, but in the end, I just winged it, and if I may say so myself, I've never made or eaten a pasta salad that I liked better. Here's what it looked like.
The volunteer petunias were looking pretty this morning.
Nothing new blooming today. I did get one rather good shot of the zinnias. I'm put some meat in the oven to make BBQ, but first I want to get a listing on Etsy.
I finished a table runner last night. It has taken me a long time to get my work space squared away after our basement was flooded. I did get rid of a large lot of boxes that were just taking up space. Everything looks better now and my stash is better organized. I think I will feel better when I get to sewing again.
Anyway, here's the table runner. It's make entirely of squares that I had already cut out and/or were left over from other projects, except for the backing, and that is cut from small pieces of fabric that someone gave to me.
You can check out more pictures at www.countrybydesign.esty.com.
How can it be Thursday night already? Where has this week gone? I have to work tomorrow and Saturday, so I won't get much done then, either. I think I have taken some photographs this week. Let me look.
Someone (sorry, I forgot your name) wanted to know if I was making any more rag quilted table mats. Today I started taking this table runner apart to make place mats instead. It is mostly unbleached muslin and red, blue, and green checked homespun. I'll post most pics as I go.
Here's my latest project. If I remember right, it is made up entirely of squares that I had already cut for other projects, etc.
I just need to attach the last row and decide if it needs a border. At first, I didn't put borders on anything, then I started putting borders on everything. On this one, I'm not sure what to do.
One of my few success stories this summer has been an old wooden wagon that we have in our front yard. This year I filled it with red and white petunias. So far, it has rained enough that they are stunning. It has helped that it hasn't been really hot until yesterday and today. We finally turned on the air conditioner. We really hadn't needed it until now. I went out this morning to work in the garden and got so sweaty that I had to change clothes, then I went out this afternoon to help my hubby try to figure out why our floor drains in the basement aren't working and got so hot that I had to take a shower! I didn't even go back out this evening 'cause I didn't want to get sticky. Rain in the forecast for tomorrow, so it may be cooler. I'll try to get a good photo of the Shasta daisies. They are just starting to bloom.
I love these little sycamore leaves, plus they are down close enough to the ground that I can reach them. It was overcast today, but I wanted to take some pictures anyway.
I went to town this morning to do my food order for camp. One more big job out of the way. Still have to order the milk and fresh produce, but I can do that over the phone.
Stopped by the school where I used to work for a few minutes. I worked with the same three people for 10 years, so I still feel close to them. I dropped by while they were on their lunch break, so we could just sit and talk. It was nice.
One of the funniest things today happened while I was outside with my camera. I even got a picture, but it didn't come out very good. One of our granddaughter's dogs who has only been here since Friday, got up on her hind legs and started drinking water out of the bird bath. Why did she do that? How did she know there was water up there? I had just put fresh water in their water dish. It really did look funny.
I put out one hummingbird feeder today. They should be coming back soon. Things have really grown in the past week. The radishes are twice as big as they were, and we have potatoes coming up. Not much in the flower bed to take pictures of, however, the iris are sending up big buds. It won't be long now!
It started raining here about an hour and a half ago, and it's still coming down. Hope all three dogs are on the porch. I have to work tomorrow, then I'm off until next Monday. I've got a set of place mats that are ready to be quilted, and I started another table runner. I'm going to rag quilt this one.
It's amazing how much more I can get done when I have several days at home in a row. I finished this table runner last night. It's another in my series of "using up my stash" quilts.
Of course, I have been ignoring all my paperwork, etc. to do my quilting, so today is catch-up day. I did start on a set of recycled place mats last night. We'll see!
I went out this morning to take some more pictures of the crabapple tree, but it has been so windy that the blooms are no longer pretty. They all have brown edges. So I walked down toward the lake to see what the flowering plum tree looked like. It is beautiful. I love this pink color. I tweaked it just a little bit.
We got into the garden again today, too. I planted sweet corn, beans, and green beans. We had already planted potatoes and radishes. Yesterday I planted three Akita dahlias and two bleeding hearts. I have never grown either one before, so we will see.
I also finished another table runner today. It is made almost entirely of recycled fabrics. I didn't buy anything new except the batting.
I will get it listed on Etsy tonight. Gotta go help my hubby fix the lawn mower. Toodles!
I love the flowers on my spider plants they look like little orchids. This one was color corrected.
This one is my favorite. It was taken in black and white, then reversed to a negative. They look like they are floating.
And here's my latest table runner. I like the scrappy strips best made up in this traditional manner. In a longer runner, I think I would like more of an unmatched look, but on this small one, I like the fact that each square is identical to the other ones.
I had to work yesterday, then I had to do some computer work. I had to retype the farm lease contract that I had put together on the computer last year. Of course I lost in when my computer died. It wasn't too much trouble to retype it. I can type pretty good without looking at the screen. That typing class I took in high school wasn't totally wasted.
I got to try something new today at work. I've always wanted to try doing a woven basket look. It wasn't perfect, but it wasn't too bad. I added a few flowers and put it out in the case. I think I'm working by myself tomorrow. Hope it doesn't get too crazy.
Think I'm going to get ready for bed and watch a little TV. I was really tired when I got home tonight.
Homemade from scratch lemon pie that I made today. It's been several years since I made a lemon pie. I kept trying to spread the topping out like it was icing! Then I almost burned it. I need to make lemon pie more often. It was delicious!
Here's the little bitty table runner that I made for my telephone table. This time, I made both squares exactly the same.
We had a really nice time tonight. We had potato soup, salad, and garlic bread with applesauce salad and lemon pie. Not too heavy but very tasty. Then we played dominoes. We like to play Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Tonight we just played for fun without trying to keep score. It was more fun, and more relaxing.
Now I need to get to bed because I volunteered to help cook at the church retreat this weekend. Plus, two of our children and their kids are coming out tomorrow, so I don't want to be gone all day. Too bad it is going to be cold and nasty.
I took pictures of my latest table runner this morning, but first another rain drop picture. This one is totally unedited, taken in black and white.
Here's my scrappy strip table runner. I constructed it with the rag quilting technique, because my main goal was to try out the scrappy strips. I rather like the fact that the strips don't match from one square to the next, although all the strips are in the same color families. I stitched the strips onto the batting with the backing already in place, so all I had to do to finish it was stitch the squares together, clip the seams, and add the border strip. The border is a plaid that repeats the colors in the runner. I made another baby runner last night with the same colors that fits my telephone table perfectly.
I have company coming tonight, so I'd best get busy. I'm going to make a lemon pie from scratch.
This photo is actually rain drops hanging under the wire grid of our patio table. I did some tweaking of the photo, but now I don't remember what. We had a thunderstorm this morning, and another one this evening. No severe weather, thank goodness. I went out just as it started to rain this morning to burn off the fence row by our mailbox and clean out the flower bed there. I had a hard time getting the fire to start, and I didn't get very much burned before it started raining so hard that it put the fire out. I got to enjoy two of my favorite things - being out in the rain and watching fire burn.
After I came in, I was still afraid to use the computer because it was still lightening, so I started working on a new table runner. I had seen a picture of some quilt squares at Sue's Quilted Gardens made from scappy strips and I wanted to try making some blocks like hers. I put a table runner together, but I'm not entirely happy with it. I'll post a picture tomorrow. After supper of leftover navy bean soup, I made another little table runner/mat to try a different technique, and I started on another table mat that I think I am going to like. I'll try to finish it tomorrow, plus the other two table runners/mats that I have started. One just needs binding and the other one needs to be quilted first.
I got to work at 11:00 again today, so I have a little bit of time. I got the two table mats listed on Etsy last night. This morning, the light was coming in my kitchen window and hitting my dining room table, so I took some pictures of my latest finished table runner.
I stepped outside my normal comfort zone to put the orange border on a pink and purple table runner. Decorating cakes all day has helped to expand my use of color. I can try interesting combinations with no problem. If they are really terrible, I can take them off and try again, but that rarely happens. I think I have a pretty good eye. Keeping the values the same helps a lot. I know I seem to be stuck on the same pattern, triangle squares, but I do the same thing with cakes. I will get a design I like, and I will make it with only slight variations until I'm tired of it, then I'll try something new. It's faster that way. I set these triangle squares in a pinwheel pattern. The last ones were in fields and furrows. I'm working on one done in barn raising. It is amazing how just changing the arrangement can make the design look entirely different, even when the basic unit is the same.
I got off work a little after 4:00 last night, but I was tired, and my eyes wouldn't focus. Finally took my contacts out and used my glasses. With dial up, it takes a long time to list things on Etsy. I don't have to work tomorrow, so I'll list this one then.
Looks like we are going to have a really nice day here today. I think they have rain in the forecast for later today. We'll see! Toodles!
